Kari Jormakka ° The Art of the City. From Camillo Sitte to Today.
A Romantic troubadour resisting the inevitable onslaught of modernism and a backwardlooking prophet of New Urbanism – or rather a proponent of modern visuality, a harbinger of the touristic gaze and Las Vegas, a precursor of Rem Koolhaas? Camillo Sitte has been portrayed in many ways ever since his book on urban design, Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen, became an international bestseller upon its publication in 1889. The present volume comprises eleven new essays examining Sitte’s vision, the origins of his thought, his influence from the 1890s to the present day, and his continuing relevance in the contemporary discourse on the city. Written by an international group of architectural theorists and historians, the collection calls for a reconsideration of Camillo Sitte’s legacy.

Gareth Griffiths ° The Polemical Aalto
The Enso-Gutzeit Headquarters in Helsinki is considered one of Alvar Aalto’s most controversial works. It is also considered a minor work, falling outside the general understanding and appreciation of Aalto’s architecture. Many of the themes found in Aalto’s most respected works are also found here, but they have not crystalised into a meaningful form. Rather than making us look at the world with different eyes, the building seems to be something all too familiar; a standard commercial office building, albeit one with aesthetic pretensions …

Jorma Mänty ° The Gender of Space
When recently collecting for recycling the many postcards I have received over the years, I put a metal paperweight on top of the pile. My brain then registered a coincidence. There it was: the city feminine, the space masculine, and the boat of indeterminate gender. And as for the paperweight: a feminine figure in front, a masculine overall figure resembled – for me – the face of Freud. The arrangement seemed to be suitable for the front cover of this issue of Datutop. – taken from the editorial preface
